Ergonomics is the study of how equipment and furniture can be arranged in order that people can do work or activities more efficiently, more comfortably and without repetitive motion injuries. OSHA has been studying the issue of ergonomic hazards for over 15 years. Statistics indicate that back injuries, the most frequent ergonomic problem, are second only to the common cold as the cause in lost work time. Ergonomic factors in healthcare include poor furniture design, lighting equipment, positioning or lifting of patients, and chronic repetitive motions.
